In the Bible (Genesis 1: 9-10), on the third day of the Creation of the World, God commanded the waters to gather together in one place and dry land to appear; thus, âEarthâ and âSeaâ are named. In this engraving, whose circular form conjures the form of the world itself, the wonder of the division between land and sea are symbolized by their attributesâhe with with his root and she with her shell, a conch similar to the Charonia tritonis (Tritonâs trumpet).
